‘Tetovo*a is a parking lot with buildings and humans’ - common saying, popular voice
'The atmosphere in Tetovo*a, North Macedonia is tense. It is a city in motion it moves constantly, not in the idea of progress or forward it is literally moving on four wheels. The entire city functions in and around cars, the first and far most important means of transport in the environment. Restless. Streets are full of mechanics, radio shows are full of car advertisements. The constant movement seems to drive people as part of the local physicality. The car itself is more than a transport option, it is an extended part of the body and identity.'
The research started in February 2021 by participatory observation on the square and the surrounding areas, conducting informal interviews with members of the baby car rental community. Following the course of several days with a camera and collecting visual data. In January 2022 we are continuing the project, expanding beyond the square into the city, engaging with different sections of car culture in the city of Tetovo*a, North Macedonia.
